# Is it legal to sell a YouTube channel or TikTok account?

> In most countries, selling a YouTube channel or a TikTok account is a private sale like any other, and the money you make is taxable. The platforms’ own rules are the bigger question: Google lets a channel on a Brand Account change owners through its permission settings, while TikTok’s terms say an account must not be transferred, or its password shared, without TikTok’s permission, and TikTok can suspend accounts. Sell through escrow, disclose everything, and know that the platform can still act on an account after the sale.

## 1. What the law covers

Most countries have no law against selling a social media channel or account. It’s treated as selling an asset or a business, so ordinary rules apply: describe it truthfully, deliver what you sold, and pay tax on what you earn.

In India, a marketplace that pays sellers deducts tax at source (TDS) on sales above the yearly limit, and sellers report the income in their own tax return. Other countries tax the gain or income in their own way, so check what applies where you live.

## 2. What YouTube’s rules allow

A YouTube channel on a Brand Account can have several owners and managers, and Google lets an owner become the primary owner after holding the Owner role for 7 days. That’s the transfer SwapCreators’ escrow agent uses, so nobody shares a Google password.

Sharing a personal Google account’s password is a different matter: it breaks Google’s terms and puts the account at risk. Monetization through AdSense doesn’t transfer either; the new owner connects their own account.

## 3. What TikTok’s rules say

TikTok’s Terms of Service say users must not give others access to their account, or transfer it, without TikTok’s permission, must keep their password confidential, and that TikTok can ban or suspend an account it believes broke those terms. So a TikTok account sale always carries the risk that TikTok restricts the account.

Monetization programs such as the Creator Rewards Program are tied to the creator’s own identity, so a buyer usually has to apply again.

## 4. How to sell with the least risk

Whichever platform, the same steps protect both sides:

- Use escrow: the buyer’s money is held until the handover is complete
- Prove ownership with a public code instead of screenshots alone
- Disclose strikes, restrictions, and monetization status honestly
- Hand over through the escrow agent, never by sending a password in chat
- Keep records of the sale for your taxes

## Questions

### Is it legal to sell a YouTube channel?

In most countries, yes: it’s a private sale, and the income is taxable. YouTube channels on a Brand Account can change owners through Google’s own permission settings, which is how SwapCreators’ escrow agent transfers them.

### Is it legal to sell a TikTok account?

Selling is generally not against the law, but TikTok’s terms say an account must not be transferred, or its password shared, without TikTok’s permission, and TikTok can suspend or ban accounts. Buyers and sellers take that platform risk.

### Do I pay tax when I sell a channel?

Usually yes, on the income or gain, under the rules where you live. In India, SwapCreators deducts TDS on sales above ₹5 lakh a year (or 5% without PAN or Aadhaar), which you can claim against your own income tax.

### Can YouTube or TikTok take an account back after a sale?

Yes. The platforms can restrict, demonetize, or suspend an account at any time, including after a sale. Escrow protects the money during the handover, not the account’s future standing.
